What's new in Autodesk Flame 2022.1

What's new in Autodesk Flame 2022

A smarter, forward-thinking Flame provides you with new camera matchmove tracking, augmented by machine learning technology. Flame's integrated finishing toolset also sees significant updates with a new creative LUT Loader and the ability to drive Flame's color grading and effects environment from a tactile colorist control panel. In response to the shift to remote work, you can also now share full-screen, high-quality video, enabled by Network Device Interface (NDI®) video preview streaming.

Camera Analysis Node – Motion Matchmove Solver:

Flame's new Camera Analysis tool provides you with remarkable, automatic camera solves and 3D geometry output. This new, next-generation camera tracker uses cutting-edge scene reconstruction algorithms similar to autonomous vehicle smart ‘vision' and reality capture point cloud reconstruction. Combining Structure from Motion (SfM) and visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) techniques, this new node produces thousands of accurately tracked points, enabling high-quality results in minutes.

With machine learning, it discards moving ‘bad data' like humans, vehicles, and sky regions that would otherwise have to be manually removed from a standard scene-based solve.

This toolset allows you to place 3D objects in a moving shot and apply masking for compositing, selective effects, or color grading. Macros for re-projection also allow you to quickly place cleaned-up ‘patches' or new elements into a scene.

Tangent Colourist Control Panel Support

Flame gets expanded Tangent colorist control panel support for Tangent Hub's Arc, Element, Wave 2, Ripple, and Element-Vs devices, allowing you to color grade entirely from a tactile control panel. In addition, Tangent colorist control panels, and iOS and Android apps can be purchased separately from tangentwave.co.uk.

Colour Management LUT Loader Matchbox

A new shader, ColourMgmt, lets you import an external file-based Lookup Table (LUT) or Colour Transform directly inside Action and Image nodes in Flame, and Flare. You can then apply the ‘look' over the entirety or a part of a picture via a Selective, through a traditional or ML-based key and GMask isolation.

Loading previously made, standard Lookup Table (LUT) or Colour Transforms from a wide variety of file formats (.3dl .cube .ctf .ccc) allows for instant creative manipulation of all or part of a picture. Imported LUT files can also be applied in a user-prescribed working color space.

Blackmagic RAW Support – Camera Raw Media

You can now import Blackmagic Design RAW media in Flame, Flare, Flame Assist, and Lustre. Its default tagged color space is set to BMD Film / WideGamut Gen5. There is also a scene-linear BMD WideGamut Gen5 CS available in Cameras/BlackmagicDesign.

NDI® – Software Video Preview

In an ongoing effort to provide remote work solutions, you can now offer a high-quality viewing experience to multiple remote viewers with Network Device Interface (NDI®). NDI® video preview streaming support enables you to multicast full-screen video across an IP computer network in Flame, Flare, and Flame Assist.

NDI® is compatible with webcasting software like OBS Studio, Skype, Zoom, Ecamm Live, or cloud-based services like SetStream (https://setstream.io). Using these 3rd party tools, Flame video preview can also be streamed to public streaming services like YouTube Live, Facebook, Periscope, and Twitch.

Community-Requested Updates

A slew of creative finishing improvements based on community feedback has been added to Flame as well, including a streamlined Linux install and configuration experience, many Gmask legacy features, being made available in the GMask Tracer, a larger curves view in MasterGrade, and an update to Python 3, required for integrating Flame into a modern pipeline.

What's new in Flame 2021

Flame® 2021 software includes a GPU-accelerated defocus effect, more ways to segment the human face using machine learning, and enhancements to the Image/Effects toolset.

Flame 2022.2 Update

13 October 2021

HDR Advanced Hue Curves

Hue curves allow you to quickly manipulate specific colors in a shot, without the need for keying. Changing the color of clothing for continuity, making a grey sky blue, and turning green leaves orange, are all common tasks that need to be done quickly, while preserving the fidelity of imagery. Flame's MasterGrade toolset now gets an expanded set of eight (8) new Hue modifiers and additional curve manipulation nodes: H vs H, H vs Sat, H vs L, Hue, Sat vs Sat, Lum vs Sat, Sat vs Lum, and Lum vs Lum.

Curves are available anywhere MasterGrade appears, such as in Batch as a standalone Matchbox node, or as part of the Selective in Image/Effects workflows. The MasterGrade curves operate in floating-point precision and are tailored to all 3 classes of color spaces – Video, Log, and Sc Linear – with ballistics automatically adjusted, based on color tagging and/or user selection. MasterGrade curves, as well as Primaries, can be controlled by external tactile control panels, such as the Tangent Arc and Tangent Element panels.

Conform Even Faster

You can now enjoy an Auto Link Matches function to save a step when conforming edits. If a definitive match is found, the media immediately links, letting users move right along to multiple match scenario selection and re-browsing for more locations to link to. Plus, the speed of scanning media is optimized, specifically when indexing MXF files.

Video Preview Enhacements

This update adds 12G SDI video output (4K UHD on a single cable) support for both Blackmagic Design video preview cards, such as Ultra Studio and Deck Link, as well AJA T-TAP® Pro support, a small form factor 12G-SDI & HDMI 2.0 ThunderboltTM preview card.

  • CentOS 7.4 is not currently supported for Flame Family 2018.3 Update (and previous versions). We recommend that you install CentOS 7.4 on a different system drive or partition if you need to maintain previous software versions.
  • The CentOS 7.2 to CentOS 7.4 upgrade path is not supported: the Autodesk custom .iso triggers a complete CentOS 7.4 install.

The upgrade to CentOS 7.4 is not mandatory for the 2020 release. CentOS 7.2 is still a supported operating system for Flame Family version 2020, but only for the platforms originally certified with it (HP Z820, HP Z440, and HP Z840).

New DKU Required for 2020 (Linux Only)

Flame Family 2020 version requires the installation of DKU version 14.0.0 on all Linux workstations. This DKU contains:

  • The new AJA 15 drivers.
  • A new NVIDIA driver (410.93)

The DKU 14.0.0 installs in /opt/Autodesk/DKU.

Note that the DKU installs the AJA 15 drivers, but that the installed AJA also requires a firmware update. To update the card's firmware, first install the new DKU, and then run the script ./AJAfw_update from the folder /opt/Autodesk/DKU/current/Utils/. If you are using a Z820, you will also find at that location a firmware update for the KONA 3G.

The DKU can be downloaded from the System Requirements page.

Backburner 2020 Update

Backburner 2020 is automatically installed when you install any Flame Family product. But if you're in an environment running Backburner Manager on a dedicated workstation, you need to manually install Backburner 2020 on that workstation to benefit from the latest fixes.

You can download the Backburner 2020 standalone installer from Autodesk online store. Search for Backburner.

AVIO Configuration Support

Flame Family 2020 version supports the new AJA 15 drivers.

  • Linux: Install DKU 14.0.0 to have access to the new AJA 15 drivers.
  • macOS: Download the AJA Software Installer v15.1 – Mac from the AJA website.

AJA 15 introduces support for the new AJA Kona 5 card for all certified platforms listed on the system requirements page.

Note: Advanced KONA 5 features are not supported in this release.

Autodesk Network License Manager Update

Note: This update affects applications licensed using Multi-User (license server), and no action is required for applications licensed using Single User on macOS.

Flame Family 2020 version requires the Autodesk Network License Manager to be updated to the latest version. This Network License Manager version is fully compatible with the Flame Family applications version 2018 and up.
